In La mémoire des planchers, Samuel St-Aubin explores the hidden dust in various spaces within his home. He has collected traces of his activities from the floors of his studio, kitchen, bedrooms, and passageways. His images reveal a fascinating microscopic universe, offering a new perspective on our daily habits and how we occupy space. This project uncovers a hidden dimension of our habitat by transforming often-overlooked elements into visual artifacts that document our presence.
By presenting these elements in a documentary format, St-Aubin creates a work that blends art, science, and anthropology. He invites us to rediscover what is usually invisible, imbuing it with deeper meaning. By playing with the scale of his subjects, he disrupts the viewer’s perception. His project goes beyond merely collecting images; it illustrates how even microscopic traces can tell a broader story about our ways of life. The artist examines an intangible reality connected to our interactions with domestic spaces, providing a fresh perspective on our influence on the environment.
Since 2002, St-Aubin has been active in the field of electronic arts and has collaborated on significant projects with several well-known artists and collectives across Quebec. In recent years, his work has focused on his artistic approach, exploring everyday objects and situations in a relevant and poignant manner. He has received multiple research and creation grants and has exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions throughout Quebec and Europe since 2013. His work was featured in the International Digital Art Biennial ELEKTRA (Montréal, 2019) and the recent MUTEK Village Numérique (Montréal, 2024). His pieces bring another dimension to realities or elements often perceived as mundane in our daily lives. Through manipulation, arrangement, and inventive processes, he places these elements in contexts that offer new perceptions. His meticulousness and remarkable precision distinguish his work.
