Les Cocons, 2022
Photography, Sculpture

Guillaume Brisson-Darveau presents a multidimensional installation centred around two sculptures that engage in dialogue with each other. The installation is accompanied by a series of photographs that explore the wearability of these works, referred to as Les Cocons [ Cocoons ]. These wearable sculptures embody the concept of an ephemeral habitat, evoking the idea of a transitory refuge created by a host organism to promote inner transformation.

At the intersection of art and biology, Les Cocons is a metaphor for evolution and adaptation to living environments. The accompanying photo series enhances this reflection by showcasing the works in various contexts, highlighting their potential to interact with different surroundings. Thus, the project invites a critical reassessment of our relationship with the environment, questioning ideas of habitat, coexistence, and adaptability in a context where the boundaries between the natural and the built may become increasingly blurred.

Brisson-Darveau is a multidisciplinary artist based in Tiohtià:ke / Mooniyang / Montreal. His practice encompasses sculpture, installation, and performance, focusing on themes of materiality, collective memory, and identity through subtly reconfigured objects and environments. His work closely examines the interactions between the body, space, and social narratives, unfolding narratives in which the imaginary becomes a medium for critical exploration, reshaping our perception of ongoing social, ecological, and cultural transformations.

His work has been presented in Canada and internationally, including notable exhibitions at the CONTEXTILE Biennial dedicated to contemporary textile art (Guimarães, Portugal, 2024), at MACBA (Buenos Aires, Argentina, 2023), and the Biennale nationale de sculpture contemporaine de Trois-Rivières (Québec, Canada, 2022).
